Sayulita is a magical town located in a bay along the Pacific coast. It’s backed by the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains and is known for beaches with strong surf, making it a great destination for water and outdoor activities.

It’s located in the Mexican state of Nayarit and travelers and expats flock to the city because of its location, street food, restaurants, and beach bohemian atmosphere. Here, you’re sure to get the beach vacation that you desire year round.

Sayulita Weather Averages

In Sayulita, thanks to its location in a bay and the trade winds of the Pacific, the weather is typically hotter during the day and cools down drastically during the evening.

The weather is great year round with the summer months (June through September) being the hottest. I can see why so many visitors who visit eventually want to settle down here for a few years. It’s a great place to vacation permanently.

Aside from the items listed below, you may also want to consider bringing a hat, sunglasses, sandals, and sunblock. No close-toed shoes required (unless you decide to go hiking)!

What to Wear in Sayulita

Now onto the fun part! Here are some examples of what we’ve worn while traveling to Sayulita.

#1 Summer Dresses

Summer dresses are a must! We love summer dresses of all lengths. Slip dresses are also great too, but some may be too “fancy” for Sayulita’s laid-back atmosphere.

#2 Shorts

Shorts are great for wearing in Sayulita! They can be worn with tank tops, over swimsuits or with t-shirts.

We love denim shorts by REVICE and Hudson

#3 Tank Tops

Tank tops are great for when it gets hot in Sayulita. Sleeveless tops will keep you cooler. Just make sure to wear sunscreen to protect your arms and shoulders.

#4 Skirts

Mini and maxi skirts are great! Throw one over your swimwear as a cover-up or wear it with a cropped tank top.

#5 Lightweight Pants

We love flowy lightweight pants. They’re great for wearing over swimwear or wearing in the evening when it gets chilly in Sayulita.

Some types of pants we love are palazzo pants, harem pants, and pants with side slits.

Avoid thick sweatpants or denim jeans. While there may be days where sweatpants are suitable, in general, it’s too hot for that here.

#6 Swimsuits and Bikinis

Because of its strong surfing culture, there are so many outdoor things to do in Sayulita.

We highly recommend bringing at least 2-3 swimsuits in case there is a wardrobe malfunction. It’s a destination where you’ll be getting a lot out of your swimwear.

We like swimsuits by Dippin Daisys and Berry Beachy.

#7 Light Jacket or Long Sleeve Sweater

For the cooler Sayulita evenings, we recommend bringing a light jacket or long sleeve sweater. It’s great to layer over what you’re currently wearing to keep warm.

We love bringing our crop sweaters, crop hoodies, and denim jackets. They’re easy to layer and style.

#8 Activewear

Sayulita is big on fitness and health. You’ll want to bring some activewear just in case you stumble into a yoga class or go hiking.

We typically bring a few sports bras, cropped leggings, long leggings, and bike shorts.

We love activewear by lululemon and CRZ Yoga (a very good lululemon dupe brand).

Read all our lululemon blog topics here and CRZ Yoga topics here.

#9 Hats

A hat is a must to protect your face from sun rays. We typically wear baseball caps, hats with large brims, bucket hats, and floppy beach hats.

The best places to shop for hats are at Wallaroo and the San Diego Hat Company.

#10 Crossbody BAg

We are advocates for the crossbody bag. It’s just a no brainer when you travel as much as we do. We like to keep our hands free to take photos, eat ceviche or drink a margarita.

We’re obsessed with crossbody bags by The Sak. They’re sustainably made and come in many prints and designs.

#11 Sunglasses

Sunglasses are a must for any sunny destination. We love sunglasses from Quay Australia. They have so many fun and fashionable styles and are super durable.

#12 Sandals

Sandals are great for walking around Sayulita. In the central plaza where most businesses are, you’ll find yourself walking on a lot of cobblestones. Wear sandals so that you don’t ruin your nice shoes or trip and hurt yourself.

We wore our sandals from The Sak! They’re super comfortable and can be dressed up or down. They’re also sustainably made.
