About Allbirds

Allbirds is a direct-to-consumer sustainable and active shoe brand that is known for their ridiculously comfortable shoes.

Founded by New Zealand-native Tim Brown and San Francisco-based engineer and renewables expert Joey Zwillinger, the brand makes its shoes out of sustainable materials such as merino wool, eucalyptus pulp, and the world’s first sugarcane EVA foam.

The shoe that put the company on the map, the Wool Runner ($110), has a wool upper and a midsole made from sugarcane-based EVA foam. The design was so successful that the Runners now come in more than a dozen styles including women’s flats.

Allbirds also offers performance sneakers such as the Tree Flyer, Tree Dasher 2, Trail Runner SWT. They also offer appare made with assortment of sustainable materials including repurposed crab shells. How cool is that?!

Below we’ll share our review of their sneakers and go over the pros and cons of shopping with Allbirds.

Allbirds Review

I received the following shoes to conduct this review:

  • Women’s Tree Flyer ($160) – I received this shoe in Lux Beige with a Blizzard Sole. This performance sneaker is designed for distance running. I wanted a shoe that I could both run and wear casually. The knit material is super thin yet durable. The flared heel and wide sole shape are super supportive. I also love the angular design of the sole, making it appear futuristic.

Allbirds Pros

  • Flared heel offers great balance.
  • Sustainably Made – Allbirds is a Certified B Corporation and they use natural materials such as sugarcane, wool and eucalyptus pulp to create their shoes.
  • Comes in lots of colors and patterns. There is a colorway and patterns for everyone. They also make seasonal colors which often go on sale.
  • Very Lightweight! Their sneakers weigh on average around 227.15g or 8.01oz a pair.
  • Machine Washable – Their shoes can be machine washed in a garment bag and then air dried. Do not machine dry your shoes because it will ruin the rubber soles.
  • Free shipping on orders over $75.
  • 30-day Return Policy – Give the shoes a try. If they’re not for you, return them within 30 days for a full refund. No questions asked! Visit their returns portal for more info.

Allbirds Cons

  • Expensive – Allbirds will run you anywhere between $40-$160 per pair of shoes.
  • Not Vegan – Certain Allbirds styles use wool, which is not vegan or animal friendly.
  • Partly bio-degradable sole – Their Bio-Based Bounce technology uses castor beans to create their SwiftFoam™ midsole which is 48% bio-based. It’s a step towards becoming fully biodegradable.

Should I Buy Allbirds?

Allbirds are great and reliable shoes for casual and performance wear. They are lightweight, come in many color options and patterns, and are great for travel because they’re super lightweight and can be dressed up or down.

They also clean easily and they’re made from biodegradable and sustainable materials. That is definitely something we can get behind. We can’t recommend them enough.
